Laila Mendonca is the children's ministry leader for New Generation Church in Christchurch.

Imagine a movement that welcomes the stranger in our midst.

Justice, mercy and humility form the framework for a new initiative at National Hui (6–9 Nov) this year: Gospel Impact Labs. Delegates can participate in one of ten labs to develop a tool which local Baptist churches can use for gospel renewal. See all Gospel Impact Labs at the end of this article. In this one with Laila, we’re creating a tool to help our local churches understand trends around immigration and displacement, so we can show hospitality and generosity to those who are new to Aotearoa.

Oi, tudo bem? I’m Laila Mendonca, a Brazilian who has been living in New Zealand since 2007. I’m a third-generation Christian, married for 16 years to Eduardo, my husband, friend, pastor, mentor, and the love of my life. Together, we have three wonderful children—Leonardo (11), Rebecca (9), Melissa (5) — and a puppy.

Growing up in a Christian family, I often felt I didn’t have a dramatic life-changing story to share. However, I later realised that being raised in a mission-focused church allowed me to participate in many evangelistic projects and ministries, preparing me to fulfil God’s purpose, especially here in New Zealand.

Since my first year here, I’ve supported migrants in various ways — some became close friends, while others I met only briefly. I’ve helped with visa applications, travelled to other cities to support families with newborns, and volunteered with English Language Partners to teach basic English to refugees. I’ve also held English classes at home and at church on multiple occasions. I've always been involved in church ministries. Currently, I'm the children's ministry leader at New Generation Church.

I find joy in helping others thrive, connect, and worship Jesus Christ, living in His freedom. My help always comes with a purpose: to let others experience the love of Jesus through my actions, words, and prayers. I’m excited to explore ways, tools, and resources that can make every church more welcoming to different ethnicities.

Youth ministry: Would your church pass the marshmallow test?

Youth ministry can be a frustratingly expensive long-term investment – but a necessary one if New Zealand’s Baptist movement is to survive.
