The rising of the star cluster Matariki (Pleiades) in some regions of Aotearoa and in others Puanga (Rigel) are markers for a new season, the new year. This is a traditional time when Māori acknowledge the cycle of life, renewal and connection with the whenua (land) and with each other. It is a time when the people reflect on the previous year, remember those who have passed, and plan for the year ahead. These are moments to gather as whānau (family) and friends. Reflect, celebrate, reconnect.

We can all participate in this season, not just on the public holiday but as we enter the new Māori year, Te Tau Hou Māori. Firstly, we give thanks to God. What a wonderful time to be writing prayers and songs of thanks and praise that we can enjoy together. Gathering for thanksgiving, sharing food, telling our stories and looking forward to the year ahead is a great plan. These are often moments when creativity is nourished and inspiration for new works and projects flows. We might have Baptists up and down the country who feel energised to create during this Matariki.

This is another opportunity for gospel renewal. We can all find ways to participate in the season and invite others to join us. It could be a church-wide event that includes our community, whānau events, or participation in our town’s celebrations. There are many innovative ways to make the most of the season.

Kia kaha.

Psalm 19

The heavens declare the glory of God;

    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;

    night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words;

    no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,

    their words to the ends of the world.
