When Hana Park from Riccarton Baptist calls herself a ‘global’, she’s referring to the fact that she was born in South Korea but now lives in New Zealand.

Hana introduced the global celebration at our 2024 Baptist Hui, an evening filled with music and reflections from people of various cultures which was, for many, the Hui highlight.

Hana admitted that after being asked to introduce the event she worried people wouldn’t understand what she was saying, that she might not represent the other ‘globals’ well enough, and that people wouldn’t welcome her “because I look different to most people in this place".

Then she received this verse from God, from Ephesians 2:19-22.
‘Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household...’

And Hana needn’t have worried; despite delegates delving into some serious constitutional issues the previous day, the atmosphere on Friday night was super-supportive and celebratory.

Hana was also on a panel of people not born in New Zealand who shared their thoughts on what being Christian was like for them and their families — in their country of origin and in New Zealand.

Panellist Jane Cong Ye, a pastor from Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, moved to New Zealand from China 12 years ago. Jane told how God had called her and her husband to give up everything they owned and start an ‘underground church’, one not supported by the Chinese Government.

“Twenty years ago, I [was] a businesswoman, not a Christian. Then suddenly Jesus invaded my life and showed me he was God, my saviour.

We had to lay down our careers, everything. We owned a lot of properties but [through dreams and visions] God commanded us to sell them and give money to the poor and support our ministry.”

The police were always watching them, Jane said.

“Once my husband was detained for 21 days, and I was arrested for preaching. Our daughter, then 12, almost gave up education, fearing she would lose us. But we had no choice; the only thing we could do was kneel down and pray, ‘Lord, if we die, we die, but do not let us die for our own sins but for your glory’.”

What could New Zealand churches learn from the global church?

Another panellist, New Generation Church pastor Eduardo Mendonca, was asked what New Zealand churches could learn from churches in his home country of Brazil.

If we’re worshiping God, we’re passionate about worshiping God! Brazil has 200 million people, so I’m generalising, but most Christians are passionate.”

“One thing I find so beautiful is the dependence on God. We are a free country and don’t have the same kind of persecution [as some countries do]. But Brazil is a very poor country, we struggle with many things. For Brazilians, God is the only source of everything – protection, sustenance, providence – and this dependence leads to a genuine devotion to God. They say, ‘God it’s only you we have but also only you we need’.”

JJ said it had been encouraging to hear someone tell her that since he came to Rice Cube, he’d learned to love his neighbour.

The Chin Glory Baptist Church Choir, who travelled from Nelson for the evening, raised the rafters with their beautiful voices. The Chin people are from the Chin state in Myanmar, and the choir was a combination of three different Chin churches based in the upper south.

Vann Cenhrang (pictured speaking) of the Chin Glory Baptist Church later led us in intercessory prayer, encouraging everyone to be bold and get out of their comfort zones by going to a different part of the room and praying out loud altogether for different parts of our world and for our leaders and our movement.

What it’s like being Christian in Myanmar?

Translated by Vann Cenhrang, Chin leader Ni Kung explained what it was like being a follower of Jesus in Myanmar.

American Baptist missionaries helped bring Christianity to the Chin province in the early 1900s, but because Myanmar is a Buddhist country, people can’t practise Christianity freely, he said.

Pastor Jonan Castillon noted the important role New Zealand plays in fulfilling the gospel mission of going to the ends of the earth.
မြေကြီးစွန်းတိုင်အောင် ဧဝံဂေလိသာသနာ ကျယ်ပြန့်ဖို့ရန် နယူးဇီးလန်းနိုင်ငံသည် အရေးပါသည့် ကဏ္ဍ၌ ရှိနေကြောင်း သင်းအုပ်ဆရာ ဂျိုနန်ကက်စတေးလွန်(Jonan Castillon)မှ ထောက်ပြခဲ့သည်။
Jonan came to New Zealand in 2011 from the Philippines with his wife Jewell and their daughter, and he pastors at Oamaru Baptist.
ဂျိုနန်သည် ၂၀၁၁ ခုနှစ်တွင် ဖိလစ်ပိုင်နိုင်ငံမှ နယူးဇီးလန်းနိုင်ငံသို့ ဇနီးသည် ဂျူဝဲလ်နှင့် မိမိတို့၏သမီးနှင့်တကွ ရောက်လာခဲ့ပြီး၊ လက်ရှိ အိုမာရူးနှစ်ခြင်းအသင်းတော်(Oamaru Baptist)၏ သင်းအုပ်အဖြစ် အမှုတော်ဆောင်လျက်ရှိသည်။
“The Christian migrants who arrive in NZ aren’t here just for the work, but to share the gospel, to obey the great commission,” he said. “They’re believers spreading the gospel to their colleagues and neighbours.
“နယူးဇီးလန်းနိုင်ငံသို့ရောက်လာသော ခရစ်ယာန်ရွေ့ပြောင်းလာသူများသည် အလုပ်လုပ်ကိုင်ရန်လာရောက်ခြင်းသက်သက်မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ မဟာစေခိုင်းချက်အား လိုက်နာလျက်၊ ဧဝံဂေလိတရားကို ဝေမျှရန်ဖြစ်သည်” ဟု သူက ဆိုသည်။ “ထိုသူတို့သည် လုပ်ဖေါ်ကိုင်ဘက်များနှင့် အိမ်နီးချင်းများအကြား ဧဝံဂေလိသတင်းစကားကို ဖြန့်ဝေသော ယုံကြည်သူများဖြစ်ကြသည်။”
“Isn’t it wonderful that, after 140 years of overseas missions sending people to the ‘heathen’ countries, NZ is reaping what we have sown?"

“In obedience to Christ’s words in Act 1:8, Christian converts are excited to be coming to NZ – which for them is like the ends of the earth!”

New fellowships

Reti Ah-Voa, Regional Leader of the Northern Baptist Association (NBA), introduced three new fellowships to the Baptist whānau.
- Samoan Baptist Church of the Living Christ
- Overflowing Baptist Korean
- Hope of Heaven Baptist Korean
မြောက်ပိုင်းနှစ်ခြင်းအသင်းအဖွဲ့၏ ဒေသခေါင်းဆောင် ရစ်ထီအာ-ဗိုဝါ(Reti Ah-Voa)မှ နှစ်ခြင်းမိသားစုထဲသို့ ဝင်လာသော အဖွဲ့ဝင်အသစ်သုံးပါးအား မိတ်ဆက်ခဲ့ပါသည်။

The initiative to translate an article into Burmese came from Vince Kilpatrick representing the Lower North Island Baptist Association, and pastor Tha Boe Kyaw of Grace Baptist Church, Palmerston North. They contacted the Baptist National Support Centre with the idea and offer as an experiment to see if engagement with our Burmese speaking people with national Baptist content would be easier in their own language. We welcome similar contact with the view to translate into more languages to reach more of our church whānau.
