The upheaval of relocating to a new city, dealing with an academic workload, and financial strain can make life tough for a student. The Baptist Student Network helps connect young people into Baptist churches in other cities as they move for study or work. We have an online list of Baptist church run student accommodation around New Zealand and this series of articles is to help raise their profile. Please share this with your young people!
In this article we hear from Avonhead Baptist Church in Christchurch about its student accommodation offering.
Martin Sutherland is the pastor at Avonhead Baptist Church in Christchurch.
The University of Canterbury has grown considerably over recent years, and it has become clear that the student population has been struggling to find good accommodation. At the same time it has been recognised that the transition to university study can be a difficult time in a young adult’s faith journey. Avonhead Baptist Church decided to address both issues.
Our manse was due for refurbishment. We had funds set aside for this and the proposal was put to the church that the project could have a missional payoff if we renovated with students in mind. The congregation embraced this as an outreach opportunity.
The goal is to welcome Christian students (probably but not exclusively from outside Christchurch), in their first year of study, providing a secure church setting with practical and pastoral support. The focus is to provide faith support at an important time of transition. At the same time, we will encourage discipleship and service as a natural part of the ongoing Christian life.
Although attuned to pastoral care and mission we are not greatly experienced landlords. We have been grateful for the advice and expertise of Baptist Resources Limited in Christchurch, who already have experience with the flats associated with Oxford Terrace Baptist Church. We have recognised that a collaborative approach across interested churches is the best way to ensure success as we seek to support a new generation of Christian leaders.
The flat has five bedrooms and two bathrooms, is newly renovated throughout and boasts a spacious, secluded backyard.
It is 2km from the University and is right next door to the church. Students will be supported by a weekly Bible study with the Young Adults pastor as well as the friendly Sunday service.
Applications are invited from all first-year students and there will be a live-in second year student.
