About this role

Full-time position

We are looking for a pastor to join our colourful and capable pastoral team, ministering in a vibrant and growing church, located in the beautiful city of Dunedin.

Background

DCBC is an established and relatively large Baptist church in Dunedin City. The church has a highly committed core membership, made up of people from every season of life and from diverse church backgrounds. The church has strong evangelical convictions, keeps Jesus Christ front and centre of the life of the church, and is faithful in proclaiming the Gospel. We value expository preaching of the Scriptures and have enjoyed vibrancy and stability in community life. We have a strong commitment to local and overseas mission, including an established and growing ministry to students at the local university.

The church has experienced growth in recent years in membership and in opportunities for ministry and mission. To help us make the most of these opportunities, we are seeking an additional staff member with prior experience in ministry leadership. This role would suit someone who has already completed an initial phase (or phases) of Christian ministry and is now looking to take their next step in leadership and ministry responsibility. We offer a collegial environment, with a commitment to developing staff to support growth in ministry fruitfulness.

Role Scope

This role would assume leadership of DCBC’s student ministry, with a mandate to take this work to the next level. We want to see more students come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and to do more to train students for a lifetime of Christian service (within whatever vocation they pursue). The role would also assume leadership of one other area of ministry and increase our pastoral capacity generally. Specific responsibilities:

  1. Providing overall leadership of DCBC’s university student ministry. This includes taking leadership responsibility for:
    • A team of volunteer leaders;
    • Weekly gatherings for fellowship, teaching and worship;
    • Preaching and pastoral care;
    • Camps and other events;
    • Further developing the evangelistic dimension to this ministry;
    • Maintaining relationships with leaders of other student ministries in Dunedin; and
    • Ensuring regular attendance and participation of students in Sunday morning services.
  1. Provide leadership to one other ministry area in the life of the church. This is for negotiation based on an applicant’s gifting, passions and experience.
  2. Some preaching on Sunday mornings and in other forums. There is also potential for this role to include teaching input into DCBC’s various training programs.
  3. General pastoral tasks as allocated by the Pastoral Leadership Team.
  4. Contribute to DCBC’s executive level leadership process.

This role is located within DCBC’s Pastoral Leadership Team, the group having executive responsibility for leadership of the church.

Faith, Skills, Gifting, Experience

We are seeking applicants with the following skills, gifting, experience and faith:

  1. Holding firmly to an Evangelical faith (in theology and lifestyle).
  2. Confidence in the Gospel of Christ and a personal passion to see people come to faith in Christ.
  3. A strong personal faith and depth of spirituality, with competence across spiritual disciplines.
  4. Theological training.
  5. A firm commitment to the local church.
  6. Experience in student ministries or working with young adults.
  7. Some experience in preaching is essential; a capacity to contribute teaching within the church’s various training initiatives is desirable.
  8. Experience in Christian ministry at a leadership level, and with evidence of having been fruitful in that leadership.
  9. Ability to work in a team, to form teams and to lead teams.

Applicants must have the right to live and work in Aotearoa/New Zealand for this position.
