The Sutherland Lecture seeks to platform significant research that speaks prophetically to local churches, pastors, and scholars involved in Baptist life in Aotearoa. This year’s Sutherland Lecture was focused on the theme of “Telling Stories” and featured three contributors: Dr Laura Schilperoort, Rāwiri Auty, and Sarah Rice. In the Lecture, they each explore how the narratives we tell—biblical, historical, cultural, and theological—shape who we become and who we imagine ourselves to be. The Lecture was emceed by Caleb Haurua, committee member for Baptist Research and History. Note: This episode is the full unedited recording, including Q&A, from the Sutherland Lecture breakfast at the National Baptist Hui 2022.

The Baptist Research Podcast, hosted by the New Zealand Baptist Research and Historical Society, is an occasional podcast which shares content from Baptist Research and History events and other connected Baptist Research networks in Aotearoa. We’re interested in “Researching Baptists, and Baptists Researching”—connecting those of us across the New Zealand Baptist movement interested in the process of research, the preservation of our history, and in linking these worlds to serve local church ministry and mission praxis.
