Rachel Sangster is the Co-pastor at Riccarton Baptist in Christchurch. She has a passion for all-age discipleship and recently interviewed Tammy Preston, who will present two webinars in March about her research into intergenerational community and developing preaching for all ages.

Tammy, we look forward to hearing about your recent PhD research of denominations across New Zealand and Australia in two webinars with the Carey Centre for Lifelong Learning (Thursday, 7th and 14th March, 12.30 pm).

Your research focused on faith communities that are intentionally intergenerational and who are on a journey of exploring what that means and looks like in their context. During the two webinars, you will share highlights from your research and give practical ideas on how leaders can move towards a more intergenerational community. I have had the pleasure of reading your thesis and discussing it with you. I know the findings and insights will be extremely valuable and inspiring for our Baptist churches and leaders.

But first – let’s get to know you a bit more!

What is something you think everyone should experience at least once in their life?

Every Australian and New Zealander should experience going to a developing country; the younger, the better. I think everyone should be able to place themselves into another person’s context, in their shoes for a while, and realise how blessed we are in the countries where we live. See life from a different perspective.

If you could be a pro at any one thing, what would it be?

I would want to be a professional singer in a band.

What is a random interest you have that has completely nothing to do with your study or work?

Would you believe...rock painting! I have always wished I could paint or draw, but I can’t. A couple of years ago, I started painting rocks. I am not good at all, but it fills that creative expression and makes me feel a little bit like an artist.

What is the most boring thing you’ve ever done?

Endured physics classes at school, much less two years of it for my HSC. I failed this subject!!

What is your favourite way of connecting with God?

Through nature and music. Sorry, that is two, but they are two equally important ways I find God.

What is one highlight from your research that you will unpack more with us across the two webinars?

One thing that stood out to me was the challenge of the type of leader or leadership style required to lead an intergenerational community. I found this very interesting, and it made me dig into this deeper. I look forward to sharing my findings and thoughts about this in March.
